Wildlife

Found an injured or orphaned wild animal?

Here are resources you may find helpful.

If you have found any young or injured wild animal, it is very important if possible to keep it contained in a warm, quiet, dark place until you can contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

The NYS Dept. of Conservation website contains a Wildlife Rehabilitator Contact List.

The Wild Bird Fund (646) 306-2862, has an intake/treatment center at 565 Columbus Avenue, between 87th and 88th streets in Manhattan, which is open Monday thru Saturday from 1 to 6 pm (in an emergency, staff is there from 9 am on).

In Brooklyn, you can also contact Sean Casey Animal Rescue (718) 436-5163 in Kensington.

For vet care, Dr. Shackar Malka at The Humane Society of New York, 306 East 59th Street, treats wildlife.  Please call (212 752 4840) for an appointment or check the HumaneSociety website to send an email.

Dr. Sara Neumann and Dr. Amy Adelman at Vinegar Hill Veterinary (718) 797-6875, 57 Front Street, DUMBO, also see wildlife by appointment.

Baby Birds

Valuable information about rescuing baby birds can be found on the WBF website (wbf.com).  If you have observed an injured bird and are unable to rescue it, you may post a message with NYC Pigeon Rescue Central online (http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/NYCPRC/)

Squirrels and other mammals

If you have found a baby squirrel or injured adult, and must care for it very short-term until you can find help, these websites are good resources:  The Squirrel Board (see the Emergency Help Needed thread), Squirrel Sanctuary (When to Rescue link), and Squirrel Tales.org.

Advice re short-term care of baby and injured adult possums can be found at Opposums.org.  For skunks, Mary Cummin’s manual can be found online.

If you find a baby or injured or sick raccoon, please call 311.
